Robert Sparks

A field of red remembrance poppies

Robert 'Bob' Sparks, I first met at 6 Armd Wksps. He was a rogue at worst and a gent at best. He moved to Munster as a Pad with a new wife. On coming home one day, she said to him, “A lot of the wives were talking about relocation allowance?”. As quick as a flash, he said, “Don't worry, love, I've paid it”. I met him again at 7 Armd Wksps / 2 Bn REME. On Jim Lutton's Recy Camp in 1992 we were on a Foden each on Dump crew, we coined the phrase Bobbing or Bobbed for resetting casualties. You could tell if a job was not going well for a jelly, because we were there, hovering, ready to Bob it. I was unemployed when my wife moved to Germany in 2009 (Civil Service Posting), Bob was there looking to find me work, unfortunately, all the jobs he found for me required an appointed person's qualifications, and I didn't have a spare couple of k. So it didn't work out. He had several employers lined up with his name and reputation supporting me.
